Lydia “Latifah” Nansubuga’s journey is a powerful story of resilience and purpose. Born in Uganda as the only girl in a family of five, she defied societal expectations that saw girls only as future wives. When faced with a forced marriage at 13 due to food insecurity, Latifah took matters into her own hands—starting a food-growing initiative using discarded seeds and compost to feed her family.
Her actions sparked community change, inspiring other girls and opening doors to educational opportunities. With support from H2OO and Sequoia Adult School, she earned her HiSET and was accepted to Prescott College. Now, as an environmental activist, intern, and youth leader, Latifah is pursuing a degree in Environmental Science with dreams of creating a more just and sustainable world. Her story reminds us: educate a girl, and you educate a nation.
