Laura’s Journey to Graduation

I remember how I used to walk past Sequoia Adult School almost every day when I took my oldest child to school, and I would tell myself, “One day, I’ll take English classes here.” At that time, I couldn’t enroll because I had to take care of my other little one. However, I never stopped dreaming about that day.

Finally, in January 2024, that long-awaited moment arrived. I promised myself that I would give it my all and make the most of the opportunity. I remember feeling very nervous, but also surprised and proud when I was placed directly into level 4 at the adult school. Since then, my journey has been very rewarding because I have always had the support and guidance I needed every step of the way.

I am currently taking level 4 classes at Cañada College, and it has been a very pleasant and enriching experience. Taking classes at the college have not only helped me learn the language but also made me feel more confident in my community and in my daily life. Learning English has been quite a challenge, but it has opened new academic and personal opportunities for me. Once I finish my ESL courses, I plan to return to the adult school to get my GED. Thanks to the effort I’ve put in and the support I’ve received, I’ve achieved meaningful academic accomplishments. I’ve had the opportunity to receive recognition for my performance, and that has motivated me even more to keep going. I have earned the English for the Workforce Award, and will be receiving the Academic Command of English Award this May 2025. Today, I can proudly say that with effort and determination, anything is possible.
